Diet & Nutrition for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Projects

At Kidney Consultants of New Mexico, we believe proactive nutrition plays a pivotal role in kidney health. A disciplined diet can improve quality of life, delay CKD progression, and potentially avoid the need for dialysis.

Why It Matters

Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and vascular disease are the leading drivers of CKD. Managing these through nutrition can help slow kidney damage and reduce complications (National Kidney Foundation).

Dietary Guidance by CKD Stage

Stages 1–2 (Early CKD)

  • Focus on reducing sodium and fluid retention
  • Maintain healthy weight and exercise regularly
  • Tight blood sugar control for diabetes
  • Cholesterol monitoring
  • Ensure adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium (NKF)

Stage 4

  • Continue early-stage guidance
  • Modest protein restriction (unless on dialysis) (KDOQI Guidelines)
  • Monitor and limit potassium and phosphorus intake based on blood levels (NKF)

Stage 5 / Dialysis

  • Strict restriction of sodium, fluid, potassium, and phosphorus
  • Increased protein requirements to prevent malnutrition (KDOQI 2020 Update)
  • Regular care with a renal dietitian to tailor your meal plan based on specific lab results

Key Nutrients to Watch

  • Sodium: Aim for ≤2.3 g/day to help control blood pressure and reduce fluid retention (NKF)
  • Potassium: Intake may need to be restricted depending on blood levels and CKD stage
  • Phosphorus: Avoid phosphate additives and high-phosphorus foods if serum levels are elevated
  • Protein: Non-dialysis CKD patients may benefit from moderate protein restriction; dialysis patients often require higher intake
  • Calcium & Vitamin D: Supplement based on lab values to maintain bone and mineral balance and manage secondary hyperparathyroidism

Why Diet Choices Matter

  • Nutritious choices:
  • Reduce waste buildup in the blood
  • Lower blood pressure and fluid overload
  • Protect bone health
  • Prevent malnutrition during advanced CKD or dialysis
  • Enhance overall well-being and longevity (NKF)

Work With a Renal Dietitian

A trained dietitian helps tailor your nutritional plan to your stage of CKD, lab values, and lifestyle. They help you adjust nutrients precisely to maintain balance and health (KDOQI).
