Eating and Living to Protect Your Kidneys
Your daily habits are powerful. What you eat and how you move can help your kidneys work longer and lower your risk of heart problems.
Cut back on salt
Too much salt raises your blood pressure and makes your kidneys work harder. Aim for less than 2,000 mg of sodium a day. Most salt hides in packaged, canned, and fast foods — not the salt shaker. Cook at home when you can, and flavor food with herbs and spices instead.
Eat the right amount of protein
You do not need a lot of protein. Eating very large amounts can strain your kidneys. Most people with kidney disease do well with a normal, moderate amount. Ask your care team or a kidney dietitian what is right for you.
Fill your plate with plants
Eat more vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains. Cut back on sugary drinks and highly processed foods. A plant-focused diet is good for your kidneys and your heart.
Move your body
Try to get about 150 minutes of activity a week — like a 30-minute walk, 5 days a week. Move at your own pace and sit less.
Reach a healthy weight and quit smoking
Losing extra weight and stopping smoking both protect your kidneys and heart.
One simple message for everyone
Two easy tests check your kidneys: a blood test (eGFR) and a urine test (albumin). Ask your doctor if you are due.
